Young entrepreneur bets on algorithms outperforming investors

The next generation of Australian business leaders are creating competitive companies that bridge market gaps and exceed consumer demands. Young entrepreneurs were recognised for their achievements and business contributions at the Young Hero Awards; an awards program dedicated to celebrating business leaders under thirty-five years old, presented by Commonwealth Bank. SBC’s editor, Alyssa Herr, and one of the Young Hero Awards judges sat down with each award winner to discover how these young entrepreneurs are shaping the future of Australia’s business landscape.

Saskia Albers, COO & Co-founder, Unhedged

Age: 34
Hometown: Sydney, NSW
Company HQ: None! We are remote by design
Year company was founded: 2020
Award: Fintech Founder Award
Describe your business in one sentence: Super simple investing app, where algorithms do the investing for you.
What does winning this award mean to you: A fantastic recognition to the team, that it’s important, in particular now, to create an more equal playing field in terms of investment opportunities for everyone.

How did your business idea form:

We saw that wholesale investors have vastly different wealth opportunities than retail investors. They have access to sophisticated tools like algorithmic investing, and managed crypto funds, and their incentives are aligned with their providers via performance fees. None of these are available to retail investors. We believe that that isn’t fair, and want to change that.

Why is your business competitive in the market:

Our algorithms are designed to outperform their benchmarks. They read millions of datapoints and trade actively, all fully automated. They actively step in- and out- of the market when they think it’s the right time to do so. They are not burdened by biases, emotions and other human flaws like investment managers. Other robo advisors use a traditional static-rebalancing approach, that is much slower to adapt to changing market conditions.

Saskia Albers, COO & Co-founder, Unhedged accepts the “Fintech Founder Award” from judge Karen Cohen, CEO, Emerging Tech Talent at the Young Hero Awards.

What’s next for your company’s future plans:

We aim to grow further in Australia and launch our crypto algo’s that make crypto investing easy.
