Startup solves delivery delays with same-day or 3h delivery

This year’s CommBank Young Hero Awards shines the spotlight on 10 outstanding business leaders from across Australia. These young entrepreneurs, aged 35 and under, are making a positive impact on Australia’s business market while pushing the boundaries of their respective industries. Let’s take a closer look at these trailblazing businesses and the remarkable founders that run them. James Fisher and Greg Leibowitz, Co-Founders of Rendr share insights into their business’s success and why they were awarded CommBank Young Hero Awards 2023: Retail Innovation Award.

What issue did you want to solve for the retail industry?

In a fast-paced online world, consumers are losing patience with slow delivery speeds…Our solution lets consumers select faster delivery options at checkout ranging from three-hour delivery through to same-day delivery. Retailers benefit from our solution through our fulfilment technology, which leverages existing crowdsourced and professional delivery networks. [Rendr uses multiple carrier services] rather than integrating with one particular carrier and being reliant on their limited capabilities.

What challenges did you face when starting your business?

One of the key challenges we had to face when starting the business was shifting retailers’ mindsets to place customer delivery front of mind. Delivery is such an important step in the customer’s journey and a number of retailers were satisfied with the status quo delivery options of ‘standard’ and ‘express’ and were reluctant to add such time-sensitive delivery options to their processes.

A number of retailers said their customers were not demanding it, so they were happy with their current fulfilment setup. However, it’s one of those offerings you don’t really know the impact of until you turn it on and see how your customers react. [We had to convince retailers that] offering faster delivery options is a strong competitive advantage that allows them to not only retain your customers but also acquire new ones.

What strategies have been the most successful for your business?

As cliché as it sounds, the most successful strategy we have implemented is keeping it simple. [Our advice is] to have a sole focus on what you want to achieve. Don’t allow that focus to get distracted in trying to be everything to everyone. We are very much of the mentality that quality supersedes quantity. If there is something your business is doing particularly well and finding success in, put your energy and attention towards that, rather than overcomplicating and overcompensating.
