SMEs risk fraud by not registering domains by Sep deadline

The National Retail Association is urging Australian businesses to protect their online assets as the cut-off date for priority access to register for their shortened domain name approaches.

Chief Executive Dominique Lamb said the consequences of not registering existing business names by the September 20th deadline will leave thousands of businesses vulnerable to cyber-crime.

“By not registering, small businesses are at risk of having their domain name hijacked and misused by opportunistic cybercriminals stealing web traffic, impersonating the original site, and scamming businesses and customers out of money.”

“Domain names are intrinsically linked to the identity of a business and it is critical to its success; small businesses cannot afford to lose their identities to fraudsters.”

“I strongly encourage all businesses to take a few minutes to register their names through the accredited registrars identified by .au Domain Administration, auDA, before registrations open to the general public in September.”

“Small businesses have been challenged with a lot in the last couple of years, considering the impacts of the pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, and natural disasters; the last thing our community needs is to be victimised by cybercriminals.”
