Entrepreneur quietly revolutionises Australia’s events industry with wireless headsets

This year’s CommBank Young Hero Awards shines the spotlight on 10 outstanding business leaders from across Australia. These young entrepreneurs, aged 35 and under, are making a positive impact on Australia’s business market while pushing the boundaries of their respective industries. Let’s take a closer look at these trailblazing businesses and the remarkable founders that run them. Alistair Stringer, Founder of Silent Sounds shares insights into their business’s success and why they were awarded CommBank Young Hero Awards 2023: Judges’ Choice Award.

What motivated you to start your business?

Quite simply, I was let go from a job and I was sick of daydreaming about building a business, so I just jumped in. I asked a few questions, did the research and created a plan. Nine years later we are still here and I still feel as ambitious as I was on that first day. The business’s initial aim was to activate spaces for silent cinemas, but this eventually led us down a different path. We found our sweet spot in helping more brands and clients nationally with unique sound solutions.

Biggest challenge you faced when establishing your business?

There are always challenges when starting and running a business such as funding, knowledge, and fear of failing. But it comes down to you, as the business owner, on how you will get past these problems. My advice is to back your own decisions, trust your gut and keep looking forward.

What sets your business apart from the competition?

A lot of businesses don’t change up their operation or are just playing it a little too safe. Meanwhile, the tables are always changing but that is the nature of the game. We are constantly asking how we can improve our product and systems alongside providing unique services you won’t find anywhere else. Staying hungry has helped us create some world-first ideas.

Most crucial factor in your success as an entrepreneur?

Success comes in different forms for us; whether that’s more channels and stages, more headphones or being an integral part of the best events. It’s always hard to judge it whilst the goalposts move. I would say I’ve found success in keeping our operation simple, having the best team and having hyper-focus. This has helped us achieve the little wins…which equals the big wins.

Most important skills for a young entrepreneur to have?

Confidence, hunger and networking skills. I know the future may be uncertain but there is opportunity everywhere and it’s all to play for!

Advice for someone considering starting their own business?

The advice I would give would be to ask yourself “What problems can I solve?” Never stop asking questions and doing the research. Make a solid business plan and build your team. Don’t sit and wait, don’t overthink it – just get started.

What is your proudest moment in your business journey?

Too many to mention, but mostly continuing to grow in business and individually. I’ve been proud to work with some of the world’s biggest brands and walk away with happy clients. Also, I’m proud of helping make world-first concepts come to life. Also, the opportunity to work at some of Australia’s best venues like Sydney opera house, marvel stadium, Taraonga Zoo, the Gabba, the state library, Sydney tower eye…the list goes on. I’m excited about where the team can take it next.
