Third of Businesses Redoing Work Each Week Due to Poor Communication

Lucid Software, the leading visual collaboration software, has today released data from its latest survey titled ‘The Agile advantage: Transforming collaboration for modern teams’ which uncovers key areas of opportunity for teams to become more agile and deliver value faster. The data reveals trends, challenges, and opportunities facing knowledge workers in Australia.

Effective communication is an obvious barrier in the Australian workforce, as Lucid’s research uncovers:

  • The high cost for Aussie businesses from miscommunication: 86% of employees lack the confidence that their team will hit its goals

  • A productivity killer: 43% of Aussie workers said it can take up to three hours to form a team consensus around the work needed to be done

Over half (54%) of Australian businesses have yet to adopt Agile work practices, leading to significant challenges with team efficiency and communication. Miscommunication, in particular, emerged as a critical barrier to productivity. Over a fifth of respondents cited unclear project requirements or scope changes (23%) and miscommunication with colleagues (22%) as the top two reasons for redoing work. Additionally, the impact of miscommunication on a person’s ability to complete work was found to be a regular issue with 33% of respondents noting this occurred weekly.

The survey also found that in 43% of Australian businesses it can take up to three hours to form a team consensus around the work needed to be done to progress business objectives. This data suggests that although teams are meeting together, those discussions are not translating into effective decision-making or clear action plans. Of those surveyed, 46% agreed that improved communication and collaboration tools would make the process of forming team consensus shorter.

“Agile work practices, when properly implemented, can greatly enhance efficiency, communication, and collaboration,”said Bryan Stallings, Chief Evangelist at Lucid Software. In our survey, 24% of Australian knowledge workers pointed to a lack of training and understanding as the biggest barrier to embracing Agile within teams. To truly unlock the potential of Agile, businesses must invest in education and development at all levels. Through professional growth initiatives that emphasise people skills like collaboration and effective communication, teams can increase their agility, leading to greater efficiency and stronger alignment with overall business goals.”

Lucid Software’s data found that 67% of respondents who implemented agile practices into their workflows noted an improvement to team efficiency. Beyond this, respondents scored ‘Offering clear guidance and expectations’, ‘Addressing workload distribution and capacity issues’ and ‘Encouraging open communication and feedback loops’ as the top three ways businesses can better support teams to improve efficiency. These findings underscore the importance of adopting Agile practices and prioritising strategies that enhance collaboration and efficiency across diverse work environments.
