Hacking season is here. Cyber Wardens is collaborating with MYOB, the leading business management platform in Australia and New Zealand, to help small businesses fortify their digital doors against rising online threats.
Small businesses are urged to prepare for a spike in cyber attacks during the busy end of financial year period. Announcing a new collaboration to lift the cyber awareness of small business owners and their employees, the Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA) and MYOB warn fake invoices and online banking fraud are on the rise. Cyber Wardens, an initiative of the Council of SmallBusiness Organisations Australia (COSBOA), is working with MYOB to protect Australia’s 2.5 million small businesses from online threats.
“Small businesses regularly have resource constraints and often prioritise their day-to-day operations or financial need over cyber security. Yet small businesses remain a gateway to gain access to other clients, business partners and suppliers working with the business, making them an entry point for hackers,” said MYOB CEO Paul Robson.
“From our latest MYOB Business Monitor research of small businesses, we found that 41% of SME respondents don’t feel prepared for a cyber attack. “That’s why we must all work together so that every small business and every small business employee knows the basic things they can do to protect themselves.” The free cyber education program, supported by the Australian government, has launched a new EOFY guide, a quick reference tool that tells small businesses what to look out for and how to combat increasing threats.
Common EOFY scam activities include impersonating the Australian Tax Office (ATO), the government’s MyGov website and financial institutions.
COSBOA CEO Luke Achterstraat said small businesses stood to lose an average of $46,000 in an online attack.
“Unfortunately, tax time is a prime hacking season, and small business owners and their staff need to be prepared and alert to online threats,” says COSBOA CEO Luke Achterstraat. “That’s why we are delighted to work with MYOB to spread the word among small business customers.”
