Thousands of extra visitors will fly into Hobart giving the local economy a major boost, after the city was added to the list of tourist destinations in the Coalition Government’s new Tourism Aviation Network support package.
The Government this week announced it was offering 800,000 half-price tickets to Australians who fly to tourist destinations impacted by the closure of international borders.
Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said this was Australia’s latest ticket to recovery as the Federal Government backs our aviation and tourism industries to lay the foundations for our economic recovery.
“This is a big win for communities around Hobart with this addition to the program,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
“Hobart was already one of several locations being considered for further inclusion in this network and based on the continued consultations we have been undertaking, it will now join the list.”
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan said domestic spending would help support Australia’s tourism sector.
“We want every Australian to book a holiday this year, because every dollar spent on a holiday is a dollar that supports someone’s job, someone’s business and our tourism industry,” Mr Tehan said.
“Our Government is now providing half-price flights to Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie, so there has never been a better time to visit Tasmania and experience one of the world’s most beautiful natural tourist destinations, visit MONA and Port Arthur, eat and drink amazing local food and wine and just have a wonderful time.”
Assistant Minister for Industry Jonno Duniam said the inclusion of Hobart demonstrated the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to backing tourism in the State.
“There has never been a better time to pack your bags and come to Tasmania. With four airports across Tasmania included in this package, Tasmania’s tourism, accommodation and hospitality businesses will benefit significantly from a boost in the number of interstate visitors,” Assistant Minister Duniam said.
Senator for Tasmania Eric Abetz said the COVID recovery relied upon Australians doing their bit to holiday at home with international borders closed.
“We know how important domestic tourism is to our economy and we understand that when the aviation industry is strong, so many other industries benefit too – that’s at the heart of this new package and I am delighted Hobart has been included.”
Flights, routes and the total number of tickets will be driven by demand and are subject to final discussions with the airlines.
