Could Australia’s ‘tradie shortage’ be caused admin overload?

With reports highlighting Australia will fall short of its 1.2 million new homes target, new data has revealed that a ‘shortage of tradies’ might not be the only contributing factor.

Research from Australia’s largest online tradie marketplace, hipages has shown hard-working tradies are drowning in excessive admin and bookwork which is preventing them from taking on new jobs.

Key results:

  • Two-thirds (66%) of tradies have lost work due to the amount of time they spend on admin

  • Three-quarters of tradies (74%) spend up to five hours per project on admin tasks alone, which is equivalent to $500 of labour

  • The top three most time-consuming admin activities include quoting (77%), scheduling and diary management (69%), and invoicing (61%)

Motivated by its vision to transform the trade industry, hipages Group is launching a new all-in-one lead and job management platform, ‘hipages tradiecore’, to help tradies build, grow and manage their businesses.

hipages Group CEO and Co-Founder, Roby Sharon-Zipser, says not only is this contributing to Australia’s tradie shortage, but the influx of big construction business closures in recent months.

“Reports say that Australia needs some help in reaching our new homes targets. But beyond recruiting new tradies, we need to free up the time of those already working.

“To help, we’re launching Australia’s first all-in-one app for tradies to alleviate admin pressures while empowering them to build better businesses – hipages tradiecore.

“We’ve already seen countless construction businesses go under after falling behind on admin – tradies need the tools and support to keep their business moving.”
